3 questions you should totally ponder during the pandemic

Life is busy and chaotic, right? Ain’t no one got time to think about fancy things, like balance and yearning and vision. Especially during this time of pandemic. When you’re basically just trying to hold your shit together from one minute to the next.

What kind of mom do you want to be? It is a great time to think about your dreams and the future. These three questions will get you started.

But maybe the pandemic is the perfect time for pondering. Because the entire world is going through a HUGE transition. And because eventually the kids will go back to school and the people will fly on airplanes and the dogs will be sad that no one is stuck at home with them anymore.

Maybe it’s exactly the right moment to fit in a little self reflection. To consider what you want life to look like in 2021 and beyond.

Envisioning your future

Good ole Stephen Covey likes to write about this heavy visioning stuff in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The 7th habit, which he calls, Sharpen your saw, is all about renewal and personal growth, with lots of tips on how to reach your best self in 4 sectors:

1. Spiritually

Meditate MORE – and try praying to calm your nerves.

2. Mentally

Read MORE – and write more.

3. Physically

Exercise MORE – and stop eating all that deliciously, unhealthy comfort food.

4. Emotionally

Empathize MORE – and remember that the small children in your house are also anxious in this time of Covid.

How’s this for a lofty, inspirational Covey quote about the benefits of working these 4 areas?

An increasingly educated conscience will propel us along the path of personal freedom, security, wisdom, and power.

I don’t know what’s going on in your world, but I’m chasing children and tying them to chairs for hours of soul-sucking, remote learning. I could really use some wisdom right about now.

I like Covey’s tips. Although, you might not have time for more reading (see #2 above). In which case, check out this super short video I found that gets at the same points.

So you can find ways to reflect on the today and envision the tomorrow. And discover a little joy in the midst of this pandemic craziness.

Reflecting on mom-life

In case you don’t have time to watch the video either, here’s my take on how to apply Covey’s 7th habit to mom-life. To help you tap your inner wisdom and envision your future.

1. What kind of mom, daughter, partner, friend, colleague do you want to be?

2. What have you learned from this whole coronavirus thing that can help you become that person?

3. What goals can you add to your post-pandemic, bucket list to achieve this future version of yourself?

We mommas don’t stop to reflect on our hopes and dreams much. We’re too busy caring for everyone else’s hopes and dreams. So, take 7 minutes for yourself – RIGHT NOW – and focus just on you. (Or go take a nap. Because you probably don’t stop to do that either.)

Let me know if you took the time to reflect and ponder any of these questions. What did you learn? What did you gain? Comment below or on Facebook at MothersRest.
